James Batchelor has a dedicated practice in teaching and creating with people of diverse movement experiences, spanning technique classes to creative workshops, mentoring and performance creation.
Alongside the creation of works such as Deepspace and Hyperspace, James has developed a practice of sharing and developing movement ideas through intimate workshop exchanges with the public. These workshops are taught in English and cater to a range of different ages, levels of experience and accessiblity requirements (eg. audio described, wheelchair accessible, Auslan interpeted).
These workshops have been delivered in contexts such as Melbourne (Dance Massive), Adelaide (Vitalstatistix), Oslo (Dansens Hus), London (Chisenhale Dance Space), Glasgow (Tramway), Bristol (Arnolfini), Paris (Theatre de Vanves) to name a few.
In 2019 James and collaborator Bek Berger were involved in the Aerowaves 'Offspring' program, which is about crafting specific encounters with young people and choreographers in the Aerowaves platform. James and Bek devised long-form workshops in Helsinki (Annantalo), Bassano del Grappa (Mini Bmotion) and Malmö (Danstationnen).
James's interest in working with young people has grown from his life-long involvement in dance, and particularly the role it played in his youth as part of the Quantum Leap ensemble in Canberra, Australia. Created by Ruth Osborne, Quantum Leap is an innovative model for youth dance practice that brings young people into contact with professional artists through a collaborative creative process. After being involved in the program from age 8 - 19, James has since been commissioned as a Choreographer on three occasions, recently creating the full-length work Proscenium in 2019. He has also mentored the dancers in their own short creations.
He has created works with Australian youth dance companies such as DRILL (Metasystems 2017), Stompin (Mirror Mirror 2018) and at dance training insititutions such as The Space in Melbourne. (Star Study 2017 and Cosmic Ballroom Study 2018).
