The radicality of Resonance lies in its commitment to remembering what we might not know, grounded in body-to-body processes, and learning. We remember together, knowing that to do so is to move and be moved. It is the act of memory which protects a thing’s, a person’s, a place’s or a moment’s existence and meanings, including life’s innate, collective will toward growth, and therefore change.

The paths we traverse extend beyond our consciousness. In Resonance (2025) and my previous work Shortcuts to Familiar Places (2022) I have navigated authorship with choreographers no longer with us; Tanja Liedtke (1977-2007) and Gertrud Bodenwieser (1890-1959) respectively. Working from traces, embodied memories and inherited context has been richly generative in my practice.

When I sat down to watch James Batchelor’s evening length piece, Shortcuts to Familiar Places, I couldn’t help but wonder whether he was winking to something ironic in the title of the performance. Even though nothing in the duration of the dance betrays a hint of irony, the word “shortcuts” in particular sticks out to me as the life and legacy of Gertrud Bodenweiser—the dance pioneer whose craft James’s inherited—is nothing but a winding path of extreme vicissitudes.

I remember how much I loved my childhood desk, which had a map of the world on its surface. It was communicative and expressive, yet at the same time mysterious and romantic. Presenting the world as flat, I was endlessly curious about its edges. A map in its minimal elegance tempts our imagination about what is left out, what it does not show.
